About me and more
I am Lagün Şengelen, known as Turkey's youngest female ballet choreographer, and I am a choreographer and ballet instructor based in Istanbul. I started ballet at a young age and was guided towards conservatory training early on. After completing my secondary education at Dokuz Eylül University İzmir State Conservatory, I finished my high school and undergraduate education at Hacettepe University Ankara State Conservatory with High Honors. During this period, I focused on classical ballet technique, repertoire, stage practice, and performance discipline.
I began my professional career as a ballet dancer at the Ankara State Opera and Ballet, performing in classical and neoclassical repertoire for three seasons. Because I wanted to push the boundaries of classical ballet aesthetics and develop my own movement language from a contemporary perspective, I moved my studies to Israel. There, I had the opportunity to work with world-renowned choreographers and became the first Turkish dancer to participate in the Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company's Dance Journey Program.
My choreographic practice is based on a hybrid structure that combines the discipline of classical ballet with the physical explorations of contemporary dance. With my Technoballet choreography, I earned the title of Turkey's youngest female ballet choreographer, and my innovative approach to transforming classical form attracted attention.
In addition to my artistic production, since 2024 I have been providing ballet, dance, and choreographic consultancy to figure skating athletes. I have participated as an instructor in international figure skating camps and worked with many competitors, including national team athletes. I work one-on-one with my students both in person and online, supporting their performances on stage and on the ice. For me, this work is not just about teaching technique; it's about helping athletes develop their own language of expression by combining the aesthetic, physical, and dramatic dimensions of movement.
I continue my productions in Istanbul and continue to develop projects that push boundaries in both the stage and sports fields.
